Cyprus non-dom: the thread answer vs the 2026 answer.

Non-dom is the reason half the "move to Cyprus" threads exist. The mechanics in those threads are mostly right. The rates are mostly from 2024.

Non-dom in one paragraph: become Cyprus tax resident without being domiciled there, and for 17 years the Special Defence Contribution that normally taxes dividends and interest does not apply to you. Salary is still taxed normally above the tax-free band, and GESY (the health system contribution) takes its capped cut. That is the machine the threads are excited about, and the excitement is not irrational.

Straight from the threads

The reason people search this with "reddit" attached, in one quote (r/EuropeFIRE):

"It looks very attractive, but I've found few forums or personal experiences talking about it. Just the usual men in shiny suits saying 'Contact Us for more information'."

r/EuropeFIRE, on finding practical non-dom information

A fair complaint. Here is what the practical experience looks like when people do share it. A non-dom company owner describing the standard structure (r/digitalnomad):

"I have a Cyprus limited company as a non-dom. The company faces a 12.5% tax on profits and a 2.5% tax on dividends. Remember to account for social insurance costs on salaries, which can be significant. Most non-doms pay a small salary and the rest as dividends."

r/digitalnomad (note: pre-2026 rates, see below)

The structure described is still the standard play. The rates are the old system: corporate tax is 15% since 1 January 2026, and the dividend side was reworked in the same reform. That is the standing problem with thread math: it was right when posted. And the necessary cold water, from a thread asking if 0% total tax is achievable:

"You will have to pay corporate income tax, gesy and social insurance on salary, both contributions and deductions. Also, you will have to pay for company, to accountant and to auditor (mandatory). You will save some taxes, but you won't get away with 0."

r/cyprus

One more, because the enthusiasm deserves its own exhibit: a FIRE poster listing "0% tax on dividends for 17 years" and closing with "I'm relocating there next week." The 17-year window is real. The flat 0% is pre-reform math. Moving next week without running the 2026 numbers is how threads become cautionary tales.

What the threads get right

  • The 60-day rule works the way posters describe: 60+ days in Cyprus, not tax resident anywhere else, under 183 days in any single other country, plus real ties (a home, a Cyprus company or role). The edge cases in the threads are genuinely where you need advice.
  • Small salary plus dividends is still the standard owner-operator structure, threads have that right.
  • "Talk to an accountant before you move, not after" is the most repeated advice across every thread, and correct. The order of operations matters more than the structure.

Where the threads are stale

Cyprus enacted a full tax reform effective 1 January 2026. Most non-dom content on the internet, Reddit very much included, predates it. What actually moved:

  • Corporate tax went 12.5% to 15%, which changes the company side of every dividend model in the old threads.
  • Dividend taxation was reworked, including a 5% rate in defined cases. The old flat "0% on dividends, full stop" line is no longer the whole story.
  • The non-dom window continues on its 17-year horizon. The status itself survived the reform.
  • Unchanged and still underrated: no inheritance tax, and the abolished €350 levy means keeping the company alive costs less than old threads claim.

To be fair, the reform is recent enough that even professionals are still digesting parts of it. Which is kind of the point: model your numbers with someone who works with it daily, not with a thread from two rule-changes ago.

The move most people actually make

Relocate personally (60-day or 183-day route), form the company (step-by-step here), register as non-dom, run salary plus dividends with a specialist doing the math for your case. Total setup and first-year running costs sit in the ranges we publish in the cost guide.. the tax saving usually dwarfs them, which is why nobody in the threads argues about the fees for long.
